This can occur when you upgrade from 1.6 to 1.8. I've seen the same issue with a few different people.
Have you recently attempted to upgrade your forums? a change of theme etc?

No, I haven't upgraded, I am still on 1.8.3. I did upload/change the theme though.
^ deactivate & reactivate the plugin and check if it fixes the referred issue

Deactivate all plugins and then re-activate them and the issue should be resolved.
You are supposed to deactivate all plugins before adding a new theme so that they work correctly once the theme is uploaded.
Keep us updated on if this resolves your issue or not.
