I thought this would be common sense: rename default admin account to something new. But a (quick) google before I did it showed no real relevant matches... Which surprises me : )
So the short question: should I rename the user 'admin' to something smarter?

Not only from the aspect of security of course but also you make it more personal. This your account at the end, you choose what suites you.
In order for it to be of value, the admin directory shouldn't have the same name across all boards, or hackers will start hitting that URL instead.

On the risk of getting off-topic... I'm more interested in removing the links to Admin CP from the forum... Used to be easy to do, I think, but in 1.8.4 it's not well documented (yet) :s

Today I went the complicated way of changing all traces of the admin account and its user id through phpadmin.
In hindsight, this would be the easier way...
Copy user id 1 (= admin) to a new user, including permissions.
Remove user admin, or (if this removes all its posts too...) degrade admin to a regular user by stripping it from all permissions...
Be done with it
