I'm updating my forum from 1.6 to 1.8, or would at least like to, but I do not want to lose all of the work that I've done on here. Is there a verified guide anywhere around that thoroughly explains to you how to upgrade to 1.8 without losing everything?
Will I lose my theme and so on by following this guide?
MyBB upgrade process does not do changes to your forum's custom themes.
yet, as a precaution you can export your current themes for later use.
however note that earlier versions of MyBB themes are
not compatible with
MyBB 1.8.x
it would be better to install & use a theme fully compatible with
MyBB 1.8.x

Your theme will most likely not be compatible with 1.8, and so there will be aspects of it that won't display or work properly because of some template changes in 1.8 themes.
