What I'd most like to see added is a notification system, one that is not through PMs. Notifications aren't PMs.
Something like XenForo, Discourse, and others have.

But why not such feature by default?

can't say about its inclusion in MyBB 1.8.x - but most probably it will be included in MyBB 2.0

This is a planned feature for 2.0. It will not be added to 1.8 as it is a large feature to add to a minor point release, which we normally only do bug fixes in.

Why it wasn't included in MyBB v1.6 and MyBB v.18? I don't think this feature request is new, it should already be existed since the release of 1st MyBB because of its importance.

The first MyBB was released in 2003... Implementing it in 1.x is a PITA and useless as we're rewriting MyBB anyways.

Basically Jones means it's an unnecessarily complex task in 1.x due to the fragmented code based. It would have delayed the (already late) release of MyBB 1.8 by a long way, and we never implement major features in minor point releases. MyBB 2.0 is the next feature release that we will be doing.
