I am interested in adding this feature, to allow different user bases (with slightly different interests) to use the same forum.

Basically, the visibility of a sub-set of the sub-forums would be controllable by the user. In their User CP, they could checkbox which of them they wanted visible. Currently, the user would have to message an admin, and the admin would move them to a different user group.

Is there a way or a mod/plugin to do this? I haven't found one so far.

At the moment there isn't one that I am aware of. You are free to post in Plugin Requests though.
