My theme, Vienna said it supports v1.8.x

However, this statement in the guide repeals:

If you have a custom theme installed, it is probably best that you look at the Diff Report and apply the changes you need.
   

if you are using a theme compatible with 1.8 then there is no need to edit any templates... in case you upgraded to 1.8 from 1.6 but decide to continue use the same old theme you had for 1.6, then you need to follow that theme update process and change the templates accordingly...
