I'd like to use a different captcha as Google's one is much more user friendly and looks nicer!

Is there anyway to implement this and replace all the existing ones?

We are currently using 1.8.5. Would you be able to further explain the steps in achieving this or is there some documentation I've missed

^ well, it should be available with other Captcha options
admin panel >> configuration (settings) >> General Configuration >> CAPTCHA Images for Registration & Posting

if there is no option to select noCAPTCHA reCAPTCHA then your forum might not be upgraded in correct manner

mybb supports like 5 diff captcha systems. this includes the google check mark captcha.
