Hello, I've installed version 1.85 on my server, but when it was up and running, it detected version 1.6.  I deleted and re-installed, and when I did the install (<address>/forums/install) it indicated that it was the install for 1.6.17: Welcome to the installation wizard for MyBB 1.6.17. This wizard will install and configure a copy of MyBB on your server.

Well, that means you installed 1.6.17 instead of 1.8.5.. Make sure to download and upload the correct 1.8.5 package.

Make sure you downloaded from :
http://resources.mybb.com/downloads/mybb_1805.zip
