I recall that you are able to send a user a private message and then you can leave so you no longer participate and receive replies. I may be wrong though.

I think that is only possible when you have set that person on your ignore list.
Otherwise this will require a plugin I think.

Yes, you should be wrong because I've checked and there are no options to leave the conversation (or existence of a conversation).
Perhaps this feature is available in MyBB v2 because it was advertised that PM will be improved.
