so this is the problem i'm having none of the text area buttons are showing, i've tried the steps from here:

So this looks like a theme problem. Can you show your codebuttons template?

I think it actually may be with the jquery, i was messing around with the coding in there and got the codebuttons to show but then something else would break

I would say: back to the start by restoring the original files?

i would but see i'm working on a custom theme.

It's best to do a fresh install of MyBB

The theme, was it for 1.6 or is it a 1.8 theme? If it is a 1.6 theme that hasn't been upgraded properly then your issue may be there.
I know you said it was a custom theme but some people use a theme and begin editing it out.

from 1.8 that's true, my theme has been edited from the stock mybb though.
