Would be nice to set a default avatar accordingly to the theme in use.
Something like {theme} replacement for group images/smilies/post icons/etc. would be nice indeed. If noone disagrees in the next few days, I'll create an issue for this.

Is it also possible to have a default avatar for the gender somehow?

As for gender avatars, they're probably too forum-specific to be implemented in the core, but I'm sure there was a 1.8 plugin posted somewhere in support sections.
If you find any plugin for that purpose, please let me know
