What's the easiest way to install your own custom forum icons?

I'm not talking about a custom icon for each forum, I know there's a mod for that. I simply mean customizing your standard forum icons (new, old, locked etc.)

For 1.6 the icons are all separate .gif images, stored in the images folder. These can be replaced by own versions.

For 1.8 this is a lot more complex matter, because there groups of icons are combined ino so-called sprites, and the individual buttons are selected from that by css techniques. But also for making sprites there is software available, also online.

you have posted in 1.6 section, assuming its correct, you can just replace the images as said by Ad Bakker in above post... in case you are on 1.8 and mistakenly posted in wrong section, check this reply....
