Is it possible to customize/edit the automated activation emails that are sent when a new user registers. If so how?

Yes, this is possible.

You'll need to manually edit the values of $l['emailsubject_activateaccount'] (subject) and $l['email_activeateaccount'] (message) in the messages.lang.php file, located in your forums inc/languages/english/ directory.
