I currently use v1.6.14 & would like to upgrade to 1.8.5 my question is will the Mod/Style still work if upgraded?

No. most of the plugins and earlier version's themes do not work with MyBB 1.8.5
all the plugins should be disabled before upgrading.
And a compatible theme can be installed & used after upgrading
