Would it be possible to add a darkened background around that portion of the postbit?

Isn't it dark enough?

The background is grey, I just want the highlighted portion to be darker so that information can be in a highlighted 'box' or whatnot.

that segment is defined by CSS class author_statistics. in the global.css it could be .post .post_author div.author_statistics
you can change its style properties as required
