Before you use the backup you should be able to look in the AdminCP and find "Statistics and Logging," then select "Moderator Log" and so on. This should allow you to see which IP removed which thread and at what time(s).
Unless of course this guy is smart and 'pruned' the logs.

Well you said that you wanted to prove who it was - all you can do is find the IP and username of the person who did it, if he was at the skate park then it was someone else with access to his PC.
