Yeah usergroup.
How can I make it so when people sign-up their set to a group?
New members are now automatically assigned to the user group "registered". You can adjust the permissions of this group to your wishes.
You can even change the name "registered". Leefish will know whether this is not recommended or not.

What I usually do is keep the group a user enters on registration as group 2. Habit from 1.6 days where the 2 was hardcoded. What you call that group is up to you.
If you want them in a usergroup as soon as they join in addition to registered then you can use the promotion system to promote them to a user group. The criteria is online or posts or time registered.
