You need to set a announcements forum in your settings.

Have you never been to the ACP ?
Admin Control Panel > (Board Settings) Change > Portal Settings

Log in to the Admin CP. Under settings click "Change".
Find "Portal Settings" in the list of groups and click on it.
Locate the announcements forum ID field and put the forum ID in it you wish to pull the messages from.
How do you establish the forum ID?
Visit your board.
Click on the forum you wish to show announcements from so that you're looking at the list of threads in that forum.
In your address bar there should be a url like forumdisplay.php?fid=x.
x indicates the forum ID you need to enter.
