thats called as Attachment system which is a core feature of mybb... you can find the related settings in following places:
to enable/disbale the feature: ACP >> Configuration >> Attachments
to define what can be uploaded: ACP >> Configuration >> left side menu >> Attachment Types
group based permission: ACP >> Users & Groups >> Groups >> Select a group (ex. Registered) >> Forums and Posts tab >> Attachment Options

This isn't really what i was looking for - attachments only place a thumbnail in the message. That's why i wondered if there was a way to make it possible for them to be inserted the same as images embedded with a url. But it is the answer to the question. Thanks for helping me out.

isnt that configurable from the settings...
