Honestly, I would love it if unread posts/threads/forums/whatever stayed unread, even after I log out and back in, like in IPB.

It really bugs me that this doesn't happen...

How serious would a code modification be to facilitate this?

Heh this has been suggested a lot. Well so far we haven't found the "best" way to do it (without major impact to performance either short term or long term). But rest assured we are working on it slowly

i used to use phpbb and there was a really good mod for that which suited my members great.

it is the only thing i miss about phpbb, mybb is better in every other respect. (IMO)

The newest version of IPB (and some earlier ones) do it too.
