On my site, it's completely impossible to post more than 3 links at a time, or certain words (like 'cuckold' and 'fetish' - even in non-porn and context appropriate instances that crop up naturally on a site devoted to creative writing) without getting the following error:

Quote:Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /newreply.php on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Exchange newreply.php with newthread.php or editpost.php as appropriate... same error occurs each time.

I've already talked to my host about this, and they've said it's not a problem on their end, but a "memory allocation and site optimisation" issue that needs attention from the software developer rather than them. Apparently:

Quote:the site is hitting the IO and receiving memory errors.

I'm not completely sure what that even means.

Now.. I'm not really convinced this is a memory allocation issue - if it was, the problem would be occurring sporadically regardless of the content of the post, I would think? Or maybe it would happen on long posts, but not short ones.

As it is, a 3000+ word long post will go through absolutely fine... as long as it doesn't contain any words that are for some reason being blocked. A one word long post WILL generate the error every single time, if that one word is 'cuckold' or 'fetish'. Various forms of profanity and words for male and female genitalia do NOT result in this error - I can't think why the word 'cuckold' is so much more offensive than every swearword and every euphemism for genitalia I've ever heard. Even the actual word 'porn' can be posted.

Likewise with posts containing more than 3 links. At first I thought this was just a spam prevention thing, except it also applies to internal links on the same site as well. Can't have one thread that links to 4 or more other threads on the site, without receiving this error, which is a bit problematic for us - we like our lists and cross-referencing and so on.

All of which really doesn't say "memory allocation issues" to me. It's a bit too specific.

But maybe I can believe it's a settings or optimisation issue... though I've been all over the Admin CP and can't work out which setting it might be. Every single setting I can find relating to spam filtering has been turned 'off', and the problem still exists.

Possibly related (or possibly not? I have no idea, seriously) but several of my US-based members can only sporadically connect to the site at all. For the moment they're using proxies or the Tor browser, which also only work sporadically. It's very trial and error for them to access the site, and this issue has been persisting for close to 10 days now. Both are on different ISPs (first thing I checked), and experiencing some frustration, understandably.

If anyone has any insight, I'd greatly appreciate it. Even if it's just something more specific I can go back to my host with. Smile

Certain words triggering 403 errors indeed seems to be related to the server configuration (most likely their anti-spam measures). You might try installing software other than MyBB (or just another installation of MyBB) on the same server to rule out plugin or configuration issues.
I actually just tried installing another installation of MyBB onto another subdomain, and got exactly the same error. Which also ruled out the MyBB version being the issue, since the installer put 1.8.6 onto the new subdomain, whereas my site is on 1.8.5.

Trying a different forum software now... I have previously had permissions issues with using SMF, where I basically couldn't edit the CSS from the Admin CP due to not being the 'owner' of the files (which also seems like a server configuration issue.) I never pursued that issue with the host because I decided I liked MyBB more anyway, which made the issues with SMF irrelevant.

Annnnnnd... yes, I get exactly the same error on a nice shiny new installation of SMF. That's definitely got to be a server configuration issue.

Thank you for the wonderful suggestion. Smile

My host has now fixed the problem - it was the security settings on the server. Apparently their default settings are very strict, resulting in them being a bit too overzealous on my site, so they've disabled the security rules for my site. Yay!

Thanks again for the suggestion, Devilshakers - I don't think they'd have believed it was a problem on their end if I hadn't gotten the same error on different software.
