By the time MyBB 2.0 will come stable, mobile devices will be dominating. It would be easier to have a start discussion button with drop down to boards. It is will become something like Windows Start button along with recent posts / unread posts buttons in tandom.

When we click the button we need to select category, right ? So a popup like this, or  a drop down to select .

So you mean make it a select menu? That is what you are showing us.

I think he suggest to implement NEW TOPIC button on index page, then when the button is clicked, there is a modal to show which category/forum we want to post. After selecting the category/forum, we will be directed to NEW TOPIC (thread) page.

I like the idea and support this...

Precisely what Zukro described. If someone dislikes, may be as an option to disable it from ACP.
