I've had spammers create accounts, then use it to send spam mail back to me (I assume to others too).
How?  I have no idea.
I'm sure because the spam stopped after I banned the spammers.

  I shut the site down it got so bad!
Since, I (think I did it right) changed the new membership to "approval only".
Can anyone tell me if that's possible, and the path to the change?
I just want to make sure it keeps the spammers out...

you can change, go to admin cp -> board settings -> login and registration settings -> registration method, now choose "Administrator activation".
