That wouldn't work because they don't allow sending php email only registration email, I would contact them to find out why you aren't getting your registration email
from what I found at the byethost website
Due to spam abuse the ability to send email on free hosting is highly restricted, and offered on a 'best effort' basis.

PHP sendmail is enabled on a really limited basis on free hosting where only registration signup emails from forums are delivered and similar types of message. You can not use PHP sendmail on free hosting for sending any emails other than registration emails from popular scripts such as forums and blogs.

I did and all I got was a person who copied and pasted that and said basically the same thing just re-worded. I've been able to get an activation email sent once to me, but that's all now I can't get anything.

Really unpleased with byethost due to this, especially the poor support.

You should check out altervista as I know that free hosts works well with php mail if you are willing to change hosts.
If you really want to run a forum, use shared hosting, if your forum gets more than a handful of visitors then it will be suspended for resource usage or will start to run really slow. Also free hosting will limit the level of popularity your site can get.

ByetHost is also very badly coded and was basically 'hacked up' by the coders to meet a deadline, meaning there's inconsistencies and stuff like that.

Here's a good paid host which is cheap and works: http://ovh.co.uk/

I'm using their second level shared plan and it's very good so far really fast and such, haven't contacted support or anything but they do have a forum. Not cPanel though.
