normal users cannot see the threads (i.e. topics) when forum is in closed status.
so no need to worry about your forum's
valuable content being displayed to normal users.
regarding the
hide plugin:
earlier version doesn't work with upgraded forum. you have to use
this version

^ not sure what help can be done. that hide until reply plugin doesn't work for MyBB 1.8.x
if you need to use that plugin on your forum then you have to buy its
upgraded version & use it
