Can anyone please tell me how i can install new read and unread icons.

It is simple, go to your images folder and change the icons in the below files :-

MyBB_ROOT/images/folders_sprite.png

Sorry i have tryed to do this but nothing happens.

All i am trying to do is change the unread and read icons on the index page to my own design

Try images/forum_icon_sprite.png

You can make new ones here: http://csssprites.com/

If your theme uses fontawesome icons then you need to change it from forumbit templates.
