Just like the question says, in 1.6 there was an option to change the Expand/Collapse images to gif from default PNG using a general.js edit.

But again, I want to change the image format to gif for a single theme. How can I achieve it?

I'm talking of Expand/Collapse images for Thead.

simple method : rename extension of your gif files as png files and use them !
