It's extremely unlikely that Euan will ever finish that plugin.
He is working on MyBB 2.0 a lot these days, and I think also trying to push updates for MyAlerts too. Very little time for what is so much work.
There exist a few forums with a similar system in place, although I expect the plugin was privately coded.

Doubt it, however MyBB 2.0 will have a conversation in place. And what Marisa said above, most forums that have conversations for MyBB is most likely custom coded.

I might finish it if I ever find the time, but as said above my current focus is 2.0 and keeping MyAlerts maintained as best as I can.
