Is this plugin worth using? 
http://community.mybb.com/mods.php?action=view&pid=640 or would it actually cause issues blocking real genuine people out?

Any firewall has the possibility of blocking real people out. It's all about providing an easy way to get unblocked if you need it.

Any application based firewall is pointless.
