It's like this with every other theme. Also, the smilies are displayed like that in the posts/threads as well. I disabled the newly-installed [in the past week] plugins, still, no luck. If you need some information regarding a test account, here:

Go to ACP > Configuration > Smilies > edit any item, what's the path? If it's just "images/smilies/image.gif", are you sure these images exist?

It appears the 'smiles' folder doesn't exist....so I'll try to re-upload it from the default Upload folder, that comes with the MyBB package.
