Hi
How do I upgrade from 1,6,15 to 1.8.7
?

Click on the blog link at the top right of the page. The update packages are located there. You would have to scroll all the way down to the bottom and click load older posts to get to the 1.6.16 upgrade package. You would then upgrade incrementally until you get to 1.8.7

^ upgrading can be done directly from old version (MyBB 1.6.x) to the latest available version (MyBB 1.8.7)
please see upgrading guidance

in brief:
* put forum off line & disable the plugins
* take backups of database, config.php file & settings.php file (database backup is most important)
* take backup of any other files which are required (eg. language files which were manually edited)
* upload files of the new version by overwriting existing files
* run upgrade script by visiting forumURL/install/upgrade.php & following the instructions
