MyBB 1.8 and the Merge System 1.8 have a few minimum system requirements:
- PHP >= 5.2
- MySQL >= 5.0, PostgreSQL >= 8.1 or SQLite >= 3
- Apache, nginx, lighttpd or IIS webserver

Though most hosting providers should offer those. If specifically a Linux provider doesn't, it was about time to find a new provider anyways .

If a hosting company was still offering PHP 5.2 by default I'd be looking at a new provider.
