Is there a better plugin that allow me to customize the tabs more deeply? The problem with this plugin is that the style in the core of the files prevent me from changing colors or doing anything to override the default style of the tabs' settings. So even if I change the style in the "MyTabs Settings", it doesn't change which make it useless.

I'm trying to center the tabs and get rid of the huge padding/margin in between the tabs. 

Afterward (which I'm sure I can figure out) is getting rid of the borders and customize the colors/background of those tabs. 

Is there a better Tabs Plugin for 1.8 to allow me to customize it a bit more deeply?

you can try using tabbed menu plugin from MyBBCentral forum.
or there are a couple of manual methods => tabbed forums | another tab forums tutorial
