What does the syndication thingy do?
Also is there a way of not having it?

It allows you to have a news feed. No there is no way of not having it.

You can remove the link at the bottom by going to the Templates... I'm to sure what one if some could post it Sad

The template is footer.

Admin CP > Templates > Modify/Delete > *template set name* > footer > remove link > update (to be more exact)

Then delete rss.php from the server and viola
