I see a syntax highlighter but the dialog box above says for mybb 1.8> use those mods...and there is no syntax highlighter in those mods.

1) Can I use this syntax  highlighter in mybb 1.8.7 and will it work?
2) Is there a syntax highlighter that i can use for mybb 1.8.7?
I haven't seen a syntax highlighter for MyBB 1.8. Since the plugin for 1.6 you linked to probably only hooks into the post parser it should work on 1.8. You should try it out on a local test board before attempting on a live board.

To allow it to install on MyBB 1.8 you will need to change the compatibility line in the plugin info function to:
"compatibility" => "18*",
OMG. Thank you so much. That worked for install. And it does work in the forums.

I cant believe it was that easy.

shcode is not by default in the BBcode option buttons. IS there a way to have a button setup instead of manually inserting the BBcode?

You should be able to add your own buttons by editing the editor's Javascript (jscripts/editor.js): http://www.sceditor.com/documentation/custom-bbcodes/
