I have the backup saved on my desktop. What should I do now?
If you can get at your sites database manager ( frequently this is PHPMyAdmin ) you can attempt to repair the table there. If not, you should be able to upload your backup copy there.

The repair failed again with the error "Can't create new tempfile: './db/mybb_adminoptions..."

How do I use the the .gz file I got from doing a backup?

It's phpMyAdmin as you said.

Did a clean install on a different server and copied the crashed db.
I'd suggest copying the mybb_adminoptions table from a previous backup and importing into the current backup if you've tried repairing. You may find there is more than one table that has becoming corrupted.
