i had phpbb, but i switched over to mybb, i thought it would be somewhat the same. now im confused on how to install a new theme...i don't know how to install it

You could start by downloading the theme that you want. There is a readme inside of (almost) all themes.
The basic steps:
Login onto your admin cp and look for theme manager. After that click on import and select the .xml file of your theme. When that's done, also up the images folder that came with your theme. Last, but not least: make sure that your theme is set as default, and you're ready to go.

o.k i got my theme, i read the little tutorial on how to do it, got me somewhat confused. o.k for the images do i replace them w/ the previous images?

You may do that, but you don't have to. You could upload them in a separated folder, and change the images path in the theme. What does the readme say?
