Alrighty, I created /cache/themes, made sure it and its parent were 755 (is 777 a risk?). Then I did an upgrade to 1.6 as per Merek's suggestion and it seems to be fine now, thank you all for your help. Even the SQL errors seem to be gone.
Will be upgrading to the newest version soon, but at least now I can breathe a sigh of relief.
