None are capable of this? Is there an easier way to show the author's avatar on all pages in showthread? Such as in a sidebar.

Capable of doing what? Last poster avatar by Dark Neo works just fine.

I never said it was broken. 
I use this plugin, but it doesn't seem to work in showthread.

On the showthread(think postbit) how can I show the first poster(author)'s avatar in a sidebar? So I need to display the author's avatar in other areas on showthread.

I recommend flpavatar - you can see the result here - just used the code from github readme file. Everything else is a CSS

This does everything I need, but the plugin doesn't work after activation. There are no settings, and whenever I place a variable in a template nothing happens. Is it working for you?

There is a setting in ACP -> General configuration -> check boxes

Solved. The settings are under Forum Display Options. Readme should be updated.
