As google and many sites using this feature if a username is test ana he has not any avatar then its avatar is its first letter of its username .
XenForo 2.0 added this feature as default .

Actually like this idea. Should be an easy plugin for 1.8x too. Much niftier idea that a default avatar which everyone ends up with.
there is also a paid plugin for this purpose in job/request section .
