It seems like you want to disable the friendly redirect after users post. You can accomplish this by doing the following:
Admin CP -> Configuration -> Settings -> General Configurations
Once you reach that page, disable "Friendly Redirection Pages".

There are 2 options
1. Use MyAlerts plugin by @Euantor . It will notify you of new updates
2. There is some auto refresh plugin for Firefox for which you can set refresh delay. Try it

live threads still works in 1.8*
This is if you are on thread, and someone posts while your reading it, it will show up without refreshing.
