During the upgrade process - I now have this issue - got through most with posts on here, but not sure why this will not now work.
/inc/languages/myadvertisementslang) is not installed
The folder /languages is set to 755
The file myadvertisementslang - I've tried as 755, 666 and 644 and none work.
Please help.

plugins should be deactivated (& uninstalled) before upgrading the forum from 1.6.x to 1.8.x
you may rename plugins folder as pluginsold and add a new folder with plugins name & check upgrading process again

Plugins were all deactivated at the beginning, but have renamed the folder anyway now, but this has not made any difference I still get the error - its on the languages folder where the problem lies I think - how far back should I roll back the upgrade?
which files you have in ~/inc/languages/ folder ?
The files there are:
index.html, english.php and myadvertisements.lang.php
With the second one being the one its says it cant find?
move file myadvertisements.lang.php to english folder. that should fix referred problem.
