It says the following contradictory things:

1. With the files extracted from the MyBB package, upload the ‘merge’ directory from the package to your existing installation of MyBB’s folder. You must keep the files inside the ‘merge’ directory.
   
2. Make sure that the directory structure is kept. (ie. the files in the admin directory should be uploaded to a directory called admin, the files in the archive directory should be uploaded to a directory called archive, etc)
   

So, must I keep the files inside the 'merge' directory, or should I keep the directory structure?  My brain hurts.

please ignore above quoted second instruction.
such structure does not exist and is not applicable for the Merge system.

merge folder (with all its contents) needs to be added to the main folder of existing MyBB forum
