I tried to replace the symbols I saw in my images directory that were called 'on' and 'off' but it changed nothing. Can somebody please tell me where to look for these two symbols? I have looked everywhere.

Right click on the image and select "View Image" or "View Background Image". It'll take you to image itself.

Tried that, doesn't give me that option as the image has a hyperlink (link to post new thread)

they are not simple images. sprite image (~/images/forum_icon_sprite.png) is used for displaying required icons.

You need to replace the sprite image. You could create icons of your choice and try some sprite generator service available online. Then, just replace the current MyBB_sprite with Your sprite image.

Too annoying, I can't get the sprites to align in the order I want them to.
