I am not a big fan of phpBB. Maybe because I have not used it extensively.

For me, MyBB or Vanilla seems to be the best free options. Flarum is good, but it is taking a lot of time in beta ( till now ).

If you are considering these options, check whether MyBB 1.8 or Vanilla have invitation system.

As for disabling registration, that is available as group permission in most software.

Thank you, meetdilip, for that.
I am starting to learn how to manage permissions in
phpBB. I am finding, just as warned, that area is
quite the handful. It starts with forums permissions,
which operate on a fragile and nearly incomprehensible
system of copying existing permissions.
At a certain point, I will be loading Mybb and hoping
for improvements in ease of configuring.
Thx, again, for the good advice.
This is MyBB community support site, so do not expect help with phpBB - it is a different system, different community, different code -> you should ask here: https://www.phpbb.com/community/

Thanks, Eldenroot. I'll restrict my phpBB questions to that site.

Personally I prefer MyBB because it is flexible and user can change/code/add everything what is needed. I have been using MyBB over 4 years, so I like it. However for your purposes maybe flarum will be better, try both of them

Really? U are on MyBB site and advertising other forum softwares.

I quite frequently mention that I built my own; which I use personally...
