Last Post plugin sidebar -- works good.
Needed additional features so added
Advanced Sidebox plugin.
Could not make Advanced Sidebox sidebar stay close to content column so went back to Last Post plugin.
Now I have two copies of Last Post sidebar.
How can I fix Advanced Sidebar to put box next to content box or delete one of the Last Post boxes?

I don't know anything about the other plugin, but I am the developer of Advanced Sidebox and I would be glad to help you get it working, if at all possible.
Which theme are you using?
Can you show me a screen shot of what it looks like and what you are trying to do?
As to the other plugin, more than likely it is inserting a variable into the index template that produces the side box content. You'll need to delete those variables from the template in order for the sidebars to go away.
If you can't figure it out, link me to the plugin and I will try to help you get it.

If you want to add sidebox in the blank space as well, you will need to modify index template to add some of the sidebox code there.
Can you share your index page template ?

Thanks for the reply. I have been avoiding getting into the
inside of this board so that others will be able to maintain it when I can't.

For the record, the display problems were a simple CSS fix, but Thomas also found a bug in the Recent Posts module. See the release thread for details.
