Manual verification questions ( with sufficient toughness ) is the best. It is almost impenetrable.

Thanks, I'll give that NoCaptcha ReCaptcha a whirl. It wasn't that clear from the blurb that this is what I needed to do.

No, I am not sure I understand...
What I see in the drop down menu is:

NoCAPTCHA
MyBB default CAPTCHA
reCAPTCHA
Are you a Human

(the last option require extra registration onto a different site).
At this moment I am on reCAPTCHA.

Too lazy to update? That's how MyBB Forums are hacked and have their databases dumped by hackers.
^Agreed. Always update MyBB - it takes less than 5 minutes, the instructions are simple, just back up before you do it.

Security questions are the best way to deter spammers and don't forget to change your admin folder. I have around 20 philosophy related questions on standby if I am under attack. Turn them on and after a week, the bots give up. I should keep them on really - and so should you!
