{$nav} isn't working when I want navigation to appear on to the op of the header. It displays as a blank, any suggestions?

may be you are referring to <navigation> in the header template. it may be moved to top of the template

Thank you so much! Is there any specific way to find {$-NAMEHERE-} functions for specific categories? I'm a little bit confused about the difference between <navigation> and {$nav}

{$nav} is used in the nav template & it is a part of <navigation>

there are many variables which are used in the templates. a variable might work only on specific set of templates
