One of the things I really like about Xenforo is that you can have private conversations (aka private message) with multiple people. Does MyBB have this?

currently MyBB doesn't has private conversations feature. MyBB 2.0 is expected to have it
however can't say when MyBB 2.0 will be released. it is in development.

A plugin (function) can this be implemented in the MyBB 1.8.11? So that the user can add the admin in the third in private messages.

^ yes, a plugin is possible.
a couple of plugins were advertised for MyBB 1.8.x which were not released in public domain.
here is a link to a plugin which is no longer in development.
if you are comfortable in paying, it'd better to hire a plugin developer for your requirement.
