I have just installed for the first time MyBB ver 1.8.11
Everything goes to plan with no errors
I insert a "lock" file in the Install Directory as required

From the Welcome screen message I can then have the choice of MyBB or Admin
MyBB/Board:- Using my browser:- domain/MyBB/index.php    gives me a blank screen

Admin :- I can log into that OK  from the above Welcome Screen
domain/MyBB/admin/index.php

If I then click on "View Forum", I am back to my blank  screen with the URL
domain/MyBB/


So my only way into the board is domain/MyBB/admin/index.php

I have checked the server which is using PHP5.5.38
I have tried a second clean install  with the exactly the same result

what is your forum url ?
if your web host panel has server error log then check recent entries of it to find the cause of error 500

Dont get misled by the "Message" board Icon on the front page
I run two sites sharing one Message  phpBB board 
Once I get MyBB running that will become redundant/deleted

does your main site has any .htaccess file ?
would you like to PM me temporary access to files (FTP) to check the issue ..

Negative

the only htaccess files are in MyBB/uploads
But I think on my first attempt to install, I deleted them but it made no difference
